Language Arts

What are we learning?

Our reading unit is all about:

  • Analyzing and decisions that the author made in the book and why. 
  • Students will uncover the deeper meanings and messages of texts written by the author. 
  • Students learn there is another layer of meaning to be analyzed in texts. These include the explicit and implicit messages, belief systems, and experiences that help us construct our understanding of the world.

Home/School Connection

  • Practice reading texts with your child and asking “WH” questions.
  • Ask Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How questions about the author's intent.

Math

What are we learning?

  • Students will demonstrate fluency with addition and subtraction within 10.
  • Students will create and solve single-step story and picture problems using addition and subtraction within 20.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of equality through the use of the equal symbol.
  • Students will determine the value of a collection of like coins (pennies, nickels, or dimes) whose total value is 100 cents or less

Home/School Connection

  • Practice addition and subtraction facts at home
  • Assist your child in creating and solving addition and subtraction problems 
  • Take time to look at different coins and review how much each is worth
  • Practice sorting and counting coins​​​​​​​

Science

What are we learning?

  • Students describe changes to their weather data. 
  • Students learn about how people respond to spring changes and they consider changes to their park they might expect to observe in spring.
  • Students observe trees, and record changes and constants in trees,  and other plants.
  • Students infer changes during spring.  
  • Students make observations of birds in the schoolyard during the spring.
  • They investigate the responses of birds and other animals to seasonal changes.

Home/School Connection

  • Take a nature walk.  Discover and discuss the changes that you see in your environment.
  • Talk about what causes those changes.
  • Have conversations about how the sun impacts our planet, our people, and changes. 

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • Students will apply the traits of a good citizen, on and offline, by working hard in school 
  • Students will understand that the people of Virginia make contributions to their communities 
  • Students will describe the stories of influential people and their contributions to Virginia, with an emphasis on 
    • Maggie L. Walker 
    • Arthur R. Ashe, Jr. 
    • Lawrence Douglas Wilder 
    • John Mercer Langston
  • Students will explain that people make choices because they cannot have everything they want. 
  • Students will understand that people save money for the future to purchase goods and services. ​​​​​​​

  • Read books/watch videos on influential Virginians ​​​​​​​
