English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)

ESOL staff

Bucknell boasts a student and faculty population that would remind one of the United Nations. Countries represented in our school include: Afganistan, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Ghana, Guatemala, India, Iran, Jamaica, Kenya, Korea, Laos, Liberia, Mexico, Morocco, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Turkey, United States, Vietnam, the Virgin Islands (and many more are being added frequently!). Obviously one can appreciate the indispensability of our two ESOL teachers.

The Instructional Program offers:

Encouragement Encourages participation of students and their families within the school community.
Support Creates a supportive learning environment. Builds connections between ESOL and school-wide instructional programs.
Opportunities Values and builds upon students' academic, linguistic, and cultural backgrounds. Fosters understanding and appreciation of diverse populations within the school community.
Learning Assists students in reaching their full academic potential.

What is your team most looking forward to this year?

Advice for families to help your student succeed in and outside of the classroom.

  • While at home, you can encourage your multilingual learner to listen to and read books through MyOn as well as checking out books in their native language from the Bucknell Library & our local public library (Martha Washington Library).
