Important Dates & Reminders
- No School on February 19th - Presidents’ Day
What are we learning?
Language Arts
- Reading: We are finishing our poetry unit and moving into our Interpreting Stories unit. We will be learning how to find the important parts of a story and retell them in order.
- Writing: We are finishing our poetry unit and moving into our Realistic Fiction unit. We will be writing stories that could happen in real life with characters who experience the world (emotions, situations, etc.) the same way we do.
- Phonics: We will be learning about “magic e,” when an e at the end of a word makes the vowel say its name (the long sound). We will be learning about how y can make the /e/ sound. We will also be learning about how c and g can make soft sounds; c sometimes makes the /s/ sound and g sometimes makes the /j/ sound.
Math
- Place Value: We are finishing our unit on place value up to the hundreds place. We are learning to add or subtract 10 from a three-digit number and add or subtract 100 from a three-digit number. We are also learning to compose and decompose three-digit numbers and compare them.
- Fractions: We will be moving into a unit on fractions. We will be learning vocabulary like halves, fourths, eighths, thirds, and sixths. We will be learning how to represent these fractions with different types of models. We will also learn how to compare the size of these fractions.
Science
- We are starting our Matter and Forces unit. We will learn about how matter can be classified and how it can change. We will learn about how forces can move an object and how forces can help us in daily life.
Social Studies
- We are finishing our unit on indigenous Americans, specifically the Lakota, Powhatan, and Pueblo. Later in the quarter, we will be learning about European exploration of the Americas and the impact this had on indigenous Americans.
Questions to ask your child at home.
- Can you summarize this book/movie /show for me? What happens in the beginning, middle, and end?
- What can you teach me about the Powhatan, Lakota, and Pueblo people? How are/were their lives similar and different?
- What is 10 more/less than _____ (three-digit number)? What is 100 more/less?
