What are we learning?

Language Arts

  • Our current unit is called Characters Facing Challenges. In this unit, students read stories in a range of genres including fable, fairy tale, and realistic fiction, in which characters must confront and overcome a problem. We will discuss:
    • Elements of a story: Challenge/Problem, Setting, Resolution
    • Characters in stories face problems caused by internal and external challenges.
    • Readers can build knowledge about solving problems in the real world by looking at how characters face challenges in stories.

Math

  • We have started a unit on place value called Thinking Flexibly to 120. In this unit, students will:
    • Develop understanding of the Place Values in numbers- one’s place, ten’s place and hundred’s place.
    • Compare and order two- digit and three-digit numbers from least to greatest using words and symbols (=, <, >).
    • Apply understanding of base ten system to money concepts using pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

Science

  • We will be beginning a unit called Wondering about Weather. In this unit, students will be
    • identifying and describing different types of storms
    • learning about precipitation, droughts, and floods
    • observing and recording daily weather conditions
    • observing and describing seasonal weather patterns

Social Studies

  • This month,we will be studying symbols and traditions. Students will learn about American symbols like the flag, bald eagle, Washington Monument, and Statue of Liberty, as well as American traditions like the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • We will then be studying three groups of indigenous Americans, the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, the Lakota of the Plains, and the Pueblo of the Southwest. Students will study each group’s relationship with their environment and how their lives are impacted by climate and resources. We will compare and contrast the three groups and learn about their contributions to America, both past and present.
