What are we learning?

Language Arts

  • In Language Arts, sixth-grade students are half way through their book club books. Students are reading historical fiction books and meeting weekly to have a discussion about their books. Students are applying their understanding of the books to writing by completing reading responses that include a diary entry or a letter. Students are also writing open-ended questions to bring to their group meeting to discuss with their peers.

Math

  • In math, sixth-grade students have been working on ratios and finding unit rates. Students have been practicing building or completing ratio tables and have continued practicing their use of the online Desmos calculator. Sixth grade is moving into finding proportions and graphing and identifying proportional and non-proportional ratios.

Science

  • In science, we are beginning our final unit on energy. Students will learn about the different forms of energy used today. Students will also explore energy transfer and electricity. Finally, the sixth graders will explore ways to conserve energy.

Social Studies

  • Students will be focusing on science for the first part of quarter 4.

Questions to ask your child at home.

  • Tell me about the historical fiction book club you are reading.
  • In what ways would you use a rate or a ratio table in real life?
  • What do you know about energy?
  • How are you feeling about starting 7th grade?
