What are we learning?

Language Arts

  • In language arts, 6th grade has been working on poetry. We have focused on four types of poetry, haiku, limerick, free verse, and ballad. Students are exploring reading and writing poetry in these four categories of poetry. 6th grade has also taken a dive into figurative language! They are learning to identify different types of figurative language including similes and metaphors.

Math

  • In math, 6th grade focused on adding and subtracting integers (positive and negative numbers) before winter break. We are now shifting our focus to multiplying and dividing integers. 6th graders are exposed to many different kinds of math problems including real-world practical problems to help them relate their learning to the real world.

Science

  • In science, 6th grade began looking at weather patterns. We have been able to explore our atmosphere and the importance of it. Looking forward, we will learn about weather patterns including the greenhouse effect and some extreme weather in our area.

Social Studies

  • We have shifted our focus to Science for the remainder of this month.

Questions to ask your child at home.

  • What is an integer?
  • Can you explain the importance of our atmosphere?
  • Can you name the layer of the atmosphere we live in?
  • Give me an example of figurative language.
  • What's your favorite type of figurative language?
