What are we learning?
Language Arts
- In language arts, we are focusing on fiction book clubs. Students meet weekly with their book club group to discuss the book they are reading. We are focusing on character development, conflict, and theme with this unit to help support reading comprehension. We will be moving into memoir writing once book clubs end. Students will be working on writing multiple paragraphs and practicing editing their writing.
Math
- In math, sixth grade is working on adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing decimals, fractions, and mixed numbers. Students will also continue practicing working with ratios and converting fractions, decimals, and percents.
Science
- In science, sixth grade is diving into the world of astronomy. We are learning about space and the planets that make up our solar system. We will also be learning about seasons and tides and how they connect with our planet.
Social Studies
- In social studies, sixth grade is learning about the regions of North America. Students are learning to recognize how where we live affects how we live including the types of geography and industries in different regions. Students are also learning about American Indians and how they lived.
Questions to ask your child at home.
- What region in North America would you like to visit someday?
- Tell me about the book you are reading for book clubs.
- What fractions did you find easy to convert to decimals and percentages?
