Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Identify the main conflict and resolution in fictional texts
  • Determine the theme of fictional texts
  • Use knowledge of transition words to understand how information is organized in sequence.
  • Demonstrate comprehension by writing responses to what they read.
  • Use information from the text to draw conclusions
  • Writers study other writers and illustrators to explore craft techniques.
  • Writers describe the decisions they are making and their intentions (why).
  • Writers consider feedback from and provide feedback to fellow writers.

Home/School Connection

  • Read and talk about books with your child. Have your child write responses to what they read.
  • Look at the author's crafts in your family’s favorites and see what you notice is repeating in different books.

Math

What are we learning?

  • End of Unit 7 Addition/Subtraction with 2 digits
  • Geometry
  • Draw a line of symmetry in a figure.
  • Identify and create figures with at least one line of symmetry.
  • Identify, describe, compare, and contrast plane and solid figures (circles/spheres, squares/cubes, and rectangles/rectangular prisms).
  • Identify, describe, create, extend, and transfer patterns found in objects, pictures, and numbers.

Home/School Connection

  • Practice Addition and Subtraction with 2 digits with students at home to prepare for the assessment.
  • Play games and identify the attributes of shapes. 
  • Scavenger hunts at home can provide students with opportunities to recognize geometric figures in their environment.
  • Look for lines of symmetry in nature.

Science

What are we learning?

  • Finishing up 
  • Force and Matter
  • Substances are made of matter and have observable and identifiable characteristics.
  • Changes in matter can be observed and investigated in order to understand the natural world. 
  • Forces can have an effect on objects. 
  • Forces have important applications in our everyday lives.

  • Knowledge of the past helps us understand the present and make decisions about the future.

  • The ideas and actions of people can shape events. 
  • Some people are “change-makers.” They want to make changes in our world to make lives better. ​​​​​​​

Home/School Connection

  • Take your child to Washington DC and explain how many monuments are in honor of important people who helped change the world around us.
