Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We are learning about word families and rhyming. We are learning about poetry and the elements that poets use in their writing.

Home/School Connection

Game: “I’m Going Shopping”. Directions: Students will listen and produce rhyming words based on a rhyming word that is provided. The pace of this game needs to be quick or kids will lose interest and be disengaged. It may be helpful to review some rhyme families prior to this activity. There is no need to be overly concerned with silly answers or nonsense words.

  1. Have the children sit next to you.
  2. To begin the game, say, “I’m going shopping for cheese.” Then point to the child.
  3. This student will produce a rhyme and then point back to the person. (e.g., “I’m going shopping for trees”)
  4. The adult will then repeat another rhyme. (ex: peas)
  5. The game will continue until you have run out of rhymes. Then the kid or parent will begin again with new items.

Math

What are we learning?

  • We are learning about composing and decomposing numbers.

Home/School Connection

  • Create math story problems with your child about your family that work with numbers up to 10. Ex: Miss has 3 cats. If she got 2 more cats, how many cats would she have?”

Science

What are we learning?

  • We are learning about weather and weather patterns.

Home/School Connection

  • Talk to your child about the weekly weather forecast for the week. See if your child can identify what the weather symbols mean. Have your child look at the highs and lows for the day and see if they can read the number.

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • We are learning about community helpers.

Home/School Connection

  • Ask your child to name community helpers they have learned about and interviewed in school. Talk to your child about a community helper that they see often in their lives (Doctor, dentist, custodian, teacher, librarian, etc.) Have your child make a card for them to show thanks for all they do in our community!
