Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • We will be critically thinking about stories and analyzing the characters.
  • In this unit, students discuss and explore stories in new ways. They will expand their thinking to ask, “What might this book really be about? What might this author want us to think about?”
  • We will discuss the author’s message and the theme of the story.
  • In writing, we will begin to write realistic fiction stories.
  • In phonics, we will continue to decode words using knowledge of ending blends including ending t blends (-nt, -ct, -ft, etc.) and ending l blends (-ld, -lp, -lf, etc. ). We will also learn the magic “e” following a CCV”e” pattern.

Home/School Connection

  • Read realistic fiction stories at home. Who are the characters? Who is the main character? What do you think the author’s message is?
  • Write a realistic fiction story at home.
  • Continue to read and practice at home. Try to write CCV”e” words. Think about words with ending blends!

Math

What are we learning?

  • We will begin our second unit on base ten concepts.
  • We will extend our understanding of two-digit place values to three-digit place values.
  • We will practice reading and writing three-digit numbers.
  • We will think about and begin to understand the value of each digit in the number.

Home/School Connection

  • Practice adding and subtracting 2-digit numbers.
  • Practice writing 3-digit numbers.
  • Ask “What is the value of the ones? Tens? Hundreds?”
  • Look for 2-digit numbers in everyday life! What number is in the ones place? What number is in the 10s place?

Science

What are we learning?

We are finishing our Wondering About Weather unit.

  • Measuring, recording, and interpreting weather data allows for the identification of weather patterns and preparation for weather and storms.
  • Different types of storms have specific characteristics that can be used to identify them.

Home/School Connection

Continue to record the weather at home!
