Hello Third Grade Families!! We just finished a great month. We had both our math and reading IReady as well as a wonderful field trip. We can’t wait to continue to learn with your students this month. As always, reach out if you have any questions!

  • January 9th - VGA Reading Assessment
  • January 11th - VGA Math Assessment
  • January 16th - Martin Luther King  Jr. Day - No School
  • January 25 - End of the second quarter - Early release 
  • January 26 - 27 - Student Holiday

Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • Researchers engage in a process of inquiry to ask and seek answers to questions. 
  • Researchers use close observation to learn new information or develop an idea. 
  • Researchers collaborate and discuss to clarify thinking.

Home/School Connection

  • Ask your student about their chosen research topic. 
  • Visit the library or pebblego.com to help your student research their topic.

Math

What are we learning?

  • Identify and draw representations of points, lines, line segments, rays, and angles
  • Identify and name polygons with 10 or fewer sides. 
  • Combine and subdivide polygons with three or four sides and name the resulting polygon(s). 
  • Represent multiplication and division through 10 × 10, using a variety of approaches and models

Home/School Connection

  • Go on a shape hunt with your student. Look for cubes, spheres, rectangular prisms, and pyramids. 
  • Count by 2,5, and 10 with your student.

Science

What are we learning?

  • some solid substances and liquids dissolve (when a substance breaks down into smaller pieces that cannot be seen) in water and some do not
  •  water temperature can affect how substances interact with water – substances dissolve faster in hot water
  •  water is a renewable natural resource, but the freshwater supply is limited, so it should be used wisely & conservation is the responsibility of all people

Home/School Connection

  • Investigate what freshwater source our water comes from. 
  • Decide how you as a family will conserve water at your house.

Social Studies

What are we learning?

  • People adapt in response to their physical environment to meet human needs.
  • People use resources in their environment to secure basic needs.
  • The contributions of ancient cultures and civilizations continue to impact our world today.

  • Use pebblego.com or visit the library to research Egypt. 
  • Talk about what contributions from Ancient Egypt we still use today.
