Language Arts

What are we learning?

  • In reading, we are focusing on testing as a genre. We are reviewing our comprehension and critical thinking skills when we read poetry, nonfiction, and fiction texts.
  • In writing, we are preparing to write a persuasive essay. We are learning more about Valley Forge and our question to think about is “If you had been a soldier in Washignton’s army, would you have quit?” To respond to this questions we will analyze and discuss four different primary sources to make our decision.

Home/School Connection

Questions to connect with your student

  • How can writing impact the world?
  • What is your favorite genre to read?
  • Do you prefer reading fiction or nonfiction? Why?

Math

What are we learning?

In math, we are focusing on the area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles. We are also studying the properties of a circle. Students are learning about circumference, radius, diameter, and pi. Students are learning about how to locate and utilize a formula to solve math problems.

Home/School Connection

Questions to ask your students:

  • What number represents pi?
  • What is the formula to find the area of a triangle?
  • How can you use area and perimeter in your daily life? (Hint: buying  a carpet, building a fence, or painting a room)

Science

What are we learning?

In science, we are learning about Energy. We will look at how all of Earth’s processes are the result of energy flowing and mass cycling within and among Earth’s systems. Students will explore why the sun is an important energy source and think about the costs and benefits of different types of energy sources.

Home/School Connection

Questions to ask your students:

  • How can energy be transformed?
  • What are the impacts of using various energy sources?
  • How can we protect, maintain, and manage energy resources and the environment?

Social Studies

What are we learning?

In social studies, students are working on a data based question. The students will answer the question “If you were a soldier in the Continental Army during Valley Forge, would you stay or quit”. Students will be looking at four pieces of data to help support their decision. We will be tying this into our writing unit for persuasive writing and students will be writing a multi-paragraph argument paper.

Home/School Connection

Questions to ask your students:

  • What state is Valley Forge in?
  • Why was it so bad staying at Valley Forge?
  • What kind of data are you looking at?
