Language Arts

What are we learning?

As we finish our non-fiction unit we will:

  • Participate in collaborative and partner discussions about various texts and topics,
  • Blend sounds to make one syllable words,
  • Blend initial, medial, and final sounds to recognize and read words,
  • Read and spell commonly used sight words,
  • Discuss meanings of words in context,
  • Ask and answer who, what, where, when, why, and how questions about what is read,  and
  • Identify the main idea.

When we start our poetry unit, we will:

  • Might notice the relationships between poems and other types of text or the relationships between different types of poems,
  • Identify the relationship between the poem and how it makes the reader feel,
  • Identify the relationship between the poem and the different connections a reader makes to it,  Relationships (comparing and contrasting) among word choice, alliteration, symbols and different devices within and across poems.

Home/School Connection

  • Explore non-fiction books with your child.
  • Take a trip to the local library to read non-fiction
  • Pick your favorite poem and read it with your child.
  • Explore kids poetry 
  • Explore the website Poetry 4 Kids

Math

What are we learning?

In Math we will begin unit 4 and we will:

  • Count forward orally by ones to 110, starting at any number between 0 and 110 ,
  • Write the numerals 0 to 110 in sequence and out-of-sequence,
  • Count backward orally by ones when given any number between 1 and 30,
  • Count forward orally by ones, twos, fives, and tens to determine the total number of objects to 110,
  • Group a collection of up to 110 objects into tens and ones and write the corresponding numeral to develop an understanding of place value

Home/School Connection

  • Practice counting at home, forwards and backwards.
  • Practice writing numbers.
  • Count by 2’s,  5’s and 10’s.

Science

What are we learning?

In science we will :

  • Make predictions based on observations,
  • Notice patterns to seasonal changes, and we can use these patterns to make predictions about weather,
  • Tell about  the amount of sunlight and the temperature changes as the season change and affect plants and animals in the environment  people respond to changing season in various ways ,
  • Explore how plants and animals respond to season changes,
  • Discuss motion, and pushes and pulls can change the movement of an object

Home/School Connection

  • Explore and discuss the changes in season.
  • Read non-fiction books about weather, season changes, and how our planet adapts to temperature changes.
  • Do a home project about an animal.

Social Studies

What are we learning?

In Social Studies we will learn about :

Map Skills

  • Some things change over time, while other things remain the same
  • There are specific words that help us describe where things are located.
  • Where people live affects how they live.
  • Geographic features may impact daily life for people around the world (food, clothing, shelter).

Jamestown

  • In what ways has Virginia changed over time?
  • How does climate and environment impact the way people live? 
  • How do people depend on other people and their environment for survival?

Home/School Connection

  • Discuss and explore where you live and changes you might notice in Virginia.
  • Explore the National Geographic Kids website.
  • Explore how climate can impact how we live our life.
