What are we learning?
Language Arts
- In language arts, sixth-grade students have been working on reading and writing memoirs.
- We began by looking at the characteristics of memoirs and exploring different memoirs in writing. We then moved into preparing to write our own memoirs.
- Students are learning more about the writing process with a strong focus on editing their writing.
Math
- In math, sixth-grade students have been working on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.
- Within fractions, students have been working on finding common denominators, equivalent fractions, and simplifying fractions.
Science
- In science, sixth grade has been studying astronomy and space.
- We created a timeline of all the technology that has been created to explore space.
- We explored all the planets within our solar system and identified the inner and outer planets.
- We have also explored why our planet is unique to all others.
Social Studies
- In social studies, sixth grade is exploring West African Empires. This will lead and connect to our next unit on European Exploration and Colonization. In this unit, students will study explorer routes and the benefits gained from exploration.
Questions to ask your child at home.
- Can you name the order of the planets from the sun outward? (Remember the acronym)
- What topic did you choose to write your memoir on? Why did you choose that topic?
- What did you like most about the tree planting day?
Casey Trees
- This month, the 6th grade worked with Casey Trees to learn about trees and their relationship to our environment. Students were able to plant trees around our campus and learn about how to take care of the trees and keep them healthy.
