Important Dates & Reminders

What are we learning?

Language Arts

  • In reading and writing, we are continuing our Nonfiction Units. 
    • In reading, we will be thinking about the topic and main idea (the what and the so what) of nonfiction texts. We will also be using text features (table of contents, images and captions, etc.) to help us understand how a text is organized and what the author wants to teach us.
    •  In writing, we will be writing our own nonfiction books about various topics. We will practice writing in different ways (e.g., how-to, compare and contrast, etc.) about our chosen topics. 
      • We are adding text features such as pictures, labels, and captions to add more to our stories.
      • We will be revising our work- editing and adding more.
  • In phonics, we will be working on 
    • Ending L blends (elf, held, milk, help) 
    • Remaining ending blends (lamp, bench, wind, mask, clasp)
    • Y as a vowel
      • Long /e/ sound (baby)
      • Long /i/ sound (cry)

Math

In Math, we will be working on

  • We are finishing up our Measurement Unit. Students measured to the nearest inch, weighed to the nearest pound and temperature to the nearest 10 degrees
  • We will begin our Conceptual Development of Addition and Subtraction Unit
    • Estimate sums and differences for two digit addition and subtraction
    • Determine sums and differences using various methods for two digit addition and subtraction
    • Create and solve single-step and two-step practical problems involving addition and subtraction 
    • Demonstrate an understanding of equality through the use of the equal symbol and the use of the not equal symbol

Science

In Science, we will be working on

  • We are finishing up our Wondering About Weather Unit. We have learned about and will learn about:
    • Weather Forecast/ Weather Across Seasons
    • Types of Precipitation (Rain, Snow, Sleet, Hail)
    • Weather Instruments (Weather Vane, Rain Gauge, Thermometer) 
    • Types of Storms (Hurricane, Blizzard, Thunderstorm)

Social Studies

In Social Studies, we will be working on

  • Holidays & Traditions. We will explore different holidays and traditions around the world. We will also talk about our own holiday traditions!
  • Indigenous American Groups. We will begin to learn about the Powhatan of the Eastern Woodlands, Lakota of the Plains, and Pueblo of the Southwest.

Questions to ask your child at home.

  • Reading: What are the text features in this nonfiction book? Can you find the table of contents? Can you find the heading? What is this page all about? What is this chapter all about? Why do you think the author wrote this book?
  • Writing: What text features can you add to your writing? Do you have labels? Did you include a table of contents? What other information would your reader want to know? What can you do to elaborate on this page?
  • Phonics: Can you tell me how to spell the red words (when, has, our, they, could, does, saw) you have been practicing? Can you spell _____? Ending L blends words (elf, held, milk, help), Remaining ending blend words (lamp, bench, wind, mask, clasp), Y as a vowel words (Long /e/ sound i.e. baby and Long /i/ sound i.e. cry) How many syllables does _____ have?
  • Math: What is __ + __? What is ___- ___? (two-digit numbers) What was your strategy? What is the part, part, and whole? Can you create a story problem using two-digit numbers? Estimate the answer to ___ + ____.
  • Science: What is the difference between rain, snow, sleet, and hail? Tell what you know about a type of storm (Hurricane, Tornado, Blizzard, Thunderstorm). 

Social Studies: What is a holiday you know about? What are your holiday traditions? What can you teach me about the Powhawtan of the Eastern Woodlands?
