What are we learning?
Language Arts
- We have completed the beginning-of-the-year assessments. These include the Diagnostic Spelling, iReady, Passage Reading Fluency, and CORE Phonics assessments. Using the data from these assessments, the students are being given support based on the skills that they need to master.
- We are in Unit 1 of our language arts skills. The students are reading different texts about nature to accomplish those skills. They will be assessed on the following skills at the end of Unit 1:
- Identifying Key Details and Determining a Main Idea
- Comparing and Contrasting Narrative Points of View
- Summarizing a Text
- Integrating Information from Multiple Texts to Demonstrate Knowledge
- Explaining the Meaning of Similes and Metaphors
- Writing an Explanatory Essay
- Identifying Prepositional Phrases
- Recognizing and Correcting Inappropriate Fragments
- Ordering Adjectives Within Sentences
Math
- The students have completed their iReady math assessments to check their understanding of different math concepts.
- We have completed our unit on Data. This unit includes skills such as analyzing line graphs and determining probability.
- Currently, the students are learning about adding, subtracting, and estimating up to the ten-thousands place value.
Social Studies
- We have completed our units on Being an Ethical and Global Citizen, Primary and Secondary Sources, and Virginia’s Geography. The students have completed activities and assessments for each unit.
- We are currently in the final unit of the first quarter, Indigenous Peoples of Virginia, and will begin the first Health unit shortly afterwards.

- Can you give me a summary of your day at school?
- What place value is the ___ in for this number? (while shopping, getting gas, etc.)
