What are we learning?

Language Arts

  • In our ELA unit of study we will be focusing on : Life Science: Plants and Animals Grow and Change
  • Every living thing has a life cycle in which it grows and changes 
  • Many stories include animal characters that grow and change

 

Math

  • The focus of the next math unit is part-whole relationships up to five to the part-whole relationships up to ten.
  • Students will practice different strategies to learn how to add and subtract.  
  • Students will apply strategies to represent, solve, and explain addition and subtraction problems within ten. 

Science

  • Students learn about how scientists observe and ask questions about the natural world by going outside to use their senses to make observations. Students are introduced to their science notebooks.
  • Students begin to think scientifically about weather and seasons, starting with summer. They learn the role of the sun/sunlight in temperature and use nonstandard units to describe temperatures and infer the seasonal temperature based on people’s dress and recreational activities. Students explore the number of hours of sunlight in summer compared to winter.
  • Students describe sky conditions: winds, clouds, and precipitation. Students begin to chart seasonal weather patterns by measuring and recording the daily weather.
  • Students explore the physical properties of various materials. Students test various materials to use for a shelter at their park so that people are protected from various types of weather. *This lesson may take more than one day.

Social Studies

  • Students will discover important locations relating to Virginia on maps and globes
    • identify shapes of the United States and Virginia 
    • locate Washington, D.C. and Richmond 
  • Students  will recognize symbols (American flag) and traditional practices (Pledge of Allegiance) of the United States to understand patriotism 
  •  Students will recognize symbols and traditional practices that honor the Commonwealth of Virginia by
    • identifying the Virginia state flag, state capitol building, state bird, and state flower
    • describing why people have symbols and traditions
